A Letter to Mr. Yamada

山田さんへ、

初めまして。私はジャイです。プリンストン大学の大学院生で、日本語の一年生です。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

さて、私は1月に日本へ行って、3月にアメリカに帰ります。ですから、日本に２ケ月間住みます。日本では、日本語を勉強して、京都へ行って、友達とあいます。その中で、京都へ行くのが、一番好きです。京都に京都大学とたくさん寺院があります。たくさん友達がいるので、私は、東京大学より、京都大学の方が好きです。

私の秋休み

私のあきやすみは、とても楽しかったです。ニューヨークのゆうめいなびじゅつかんにいきました。そして、おいしいのたべものをたべて、カフェでともだちとあいました。そして、たくさんしゅくだいがありましたから。図書館でたくさんほんをよんで、とてもたいへんで、むずかしです。

Reflection & revised goal

After half semester’s Shadowing, I feel like I have improved a lot in my speaking skills. But there are still several problems:

l  Intonation. I feel I am really not sensible enough to the ups and downs in a word and sentence.

l  Sometimes, when speaking fast, I usually mix up かandが, た and だ, etc.

In order to improve more, I think I need do the following:

l  Like Shibata sensei said, I need to memorize the intonation of words when memorizing words.

l  Just practice more, then listen to what I have said and pay attention to those katakana.

My Goals in Learning Japanese

My goals in learning Japanese go as follow:

• Speaking: Speak faster than now, and sounds like a native speaker at the end of this semester; Be accurate at the pitch and intonation of words and sentences.  
• Listening: Try to understand daily dialogues in normal speed, and get the information I want even though I cannot understand all of the conversation.
• Writing: Be able to write short and simple passages about myself, my family, and diary, etc.

In order to achieve these goals, I plan to

• go to Shibata sensee's office hour when I have any problems with my pronunciation (3 times this semester?).
• watch Japanese anime for 10 minutes a day,and at least 3 days per week. 
• watch one NHK documentary per week.

That's all that came into my mind right now. Maybe I will add more in the future.

My Second Day in JPN101

The course seems simple to me, for I am quite familiar with the alphabet. But what I need to improve is my speaking and listening skills. The way my teacher teach here (focus on speaking and listening skills) are quite different from that of my teacher in China. Hope I will get what I need in JPN101 and successive courses.
